Not that popular with people in the South, it is highly popular with people in the North. There are pockets of interest in many states, and there are some people in the South who do play the cornhole game. A person will not see the kind of following, though, that is seen in the North. There is an ongoing argument between these states as to what the game actually is, what it should rightfully be called, and where it was created. In Chicago, Illinois, they often call it the beanbag toss, and they claim it got its start there. Cleveland, Ohio also makes the origination claim, calling their game cornhole instead of beanbag toss.
One other difference is the size of the board ? three feet by four feet for cornhole, and two feet by four feet for the beanbag toss. In some places, though, the board is the same size and the name means the same thing. Everyone seems to have their own opinion of what the game should be called and where it originated. There will always be arguments as to who is right or wrong. Despite this, however, they are united in their love of the game. This is quite likely because the game is a lot of fun to play, and it is also very easy. Almost everyone can learn the rules, and almost everyone can play the game, regardless of age or skill level. Backyard barbecues, birthday parties, and tailgate parties are just some of the places that friends and families play this game. In addition, there are tournaments in the Northern part of the country for individuals who are more serious about the game. These tournaments offer trophies and prizes for the winners.
Those who live and work in the Northern part of the country and play cornhole frequently hope that it will catch on to the point that the tournaments are picked up by major television networks, much the same way that bowling, billiards, and cup stacking have done. While it is possible that this will happen in the future, right now it looks very unlikely and there are no indications that it may happen. For those who play in the tournaments, however, they will continue to participate in them regardless of whether they have any kind of television, radio, or newspaper coverage. The people who love the game play it and work to get better at it because they love it, not because they feel that they will get recognition. They also like to teach others how to play the game, since basically anyone can follow the directions and play the game without any undue stress or strain. This is, overall a lot of the reason that the Northern part of the country has made the cornhole game so popular.
